The median of US-431 near Atalla had begun to erode beneath the edge of the asphalt. This bifurcated 4-lance section of US-431 is in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains where steep inclines create velocities that require durable ditch lining.

Erosion beneath the edge of the asphalt

RETEM 3D Steel Grid - Sole Source Letter "The RETEM System" sole source letter allowed ALDOT District 15 to get a PO from a local contractor to install "The RETEM System".

"We have installed several 3D steel grid projects in the Region and believed it was the best solution" shared Cody Adams, District Administrator.

Project Requirements

Shaping (1-day)

To minimize cost, ALDOT forces shaped the ditch with a track hoe the week prior to construction. The ditch was u-shaped and completed in 1-day.

RETEM 3D Grid (2 hours)

Grout Inc. was the contractor selected to install the ditch. The steel grid was installed on Monday-April 7th in 2 hours. Over 200 sheets of 3D Steel Grid (4' by 7') were placed by 4 workers.

Concrete (3.5 hours)

Concrete placement began on April 8th at 9:00 am and the project was completed at 12:30 pm. The project required 81 yd3 of concrete provided by Kirkpatrick Concrete. Rakes, shovels, and concrete pulls were all the equipment the 4-man crew needed.

"We are very pleased with the way the project turned out and are working on a similar project near Mentone"

- Dr. Sean Butler, Guntersville Area Maintenance Engineer.
