After discussing where a demonstration project would be beneficial, Michael Dick, PE District 17 Engineer made the decision to install on I-40 east of Knoxville. This section of interstate has a significant grade change between east and west bound directions with a near 1:1 slope. It is plated with #57 aggregates. Over time, washing has occurred evidenced by deep reels washing stone onto the inside shoulder of the east bound lane. This has created a maintenance challenge requiring periodic clean up.

After TNDOT shaped the 325 SF area, the RETEM System was installed. The process included 1) placement of polyethylene underlayment and 2) installation of RETEM 3D Steel Grid with anchors. The area required 4 cubic yards of concrete. The RETEM System was placed in 1 hour. The concrete was placed directly from the ready-mix truck flume and from the equipment bucket.

The process went quickly and gave us an option where we can place concrete on the steep slope
